Arrows are universally understood to convey movement. The symmetrical juxtaposition of inward and outward arrows communicates both use and reuse conceptually, with the smaller arrows representing input–‘recycle’–and the larger outward arrows representing reuse of recycled content. Smaller arrows as the input also signify the ‘reduce’ concept: using less, so there is less to recycle. The use of the color green reinforces this connection, since green is used for the recycling symbol and thus is commonly recognized. This symbol can be used in a large format, but also is easily reproducible in a small format, which will probably be the most common usage. The Reduce/Reuse/Recycle symbol should be accompanied by those words until the symbol has been in use for a period of time and is recognized by the symbol only, much like the ‘recycle’ symbol is now.
